Good value.
I’ve tried several coffees in the past year. This ITALIAN Dark Roast Whole bean – 5 LB is perhaps not the *best* coffee, but it ranks very highly. The price makes it even better. At $.52/ounce, it blows away other coffees that I might like better. I’m not finished experimenting, not by a long shot, but this is very good coffee that I’m willing to serve to family and guests. I like the 5 pound bag. I grind about twice a week, about 1/2 pound at a time. The remainder gets resealed, and put inside of an airtight plastic canister. It stays fresh right up until the last batch of grinding. What does it taste like? Well, it has that sorta chocolatey taste that people talk about. There are flavors that linger on the upper pallete and at the back of the tongue. It’s just a nice, full bodied, satisfying taste (and aroma) that competes with many other, much more expensive brands of coffee. Some reviewers have commented on the oily beans. Yes, these are somewhat oily. Those oils contain the aromatics that give coffees their distinctive flavors. It seems to me that those oily beans are a requirement for good, dark roast coffees.I’m giving this coffee 5 stars.

Excellent, robust flavor.
These coffee beans are very oily which is exactly what you want to have in high quality beans. Suitable for a fine espresso grind.

Great coffee -Great price!
Being able to find 5 lbs of whole bean coffee for their price was a great find! Then there was the price, amazing! We weren’t expecting anything spectacular but we were pleasantly surprised! The coffee was strong and smooth with the little bit of bite you want dark coffee to have! We loved it so much we just opened our 2nd bag!

Best coffee we’ve found!
We’ve been using this coffee for since May of 2020 and are VERY happy with it. We regularly get compliments on our coffee as well.We brew using a Bodum pour-over, and grind in our VitaMix blender. VERY happy with this coffee. Price is also outstanding.

Pound for Pound
Any robusta bean will give you 22mg of caffeine per gram of grinded robusta coffee.A 12 gram grinded robusta coffee will yield 264mg caffeine, this is the typical double shot espresso.A black label robusta coffee is claiming 1555mg caffeine for a 12 oz coffee, but the actual robusta grinded coffee in that 12 oz is about 5 table spoon. If you calculate how many grams of robusta grinded coffee in 1 table spoon it’s 14.175 grams x 5 = 70.87 grams of grinded robusta coffee and multiply that 70.87 grams to 22mg per gram you’ll get 1559 caffeine.IOW, any robusta grinded coffee all have the same amount of caffeine in milligram per gram the only difference is the PRICE.Brooklyn Coffee bean 5 pound is $40 and the other label is $43 per pound.

The beans are oily but flavor was great
The beans are super oily and were hard for our grinder to catch and chop. We had to babysit our grinder and shake every 30-60 seconds. Never had to do this before with any other bean. My husband likes black coffee so I thought he’d like this flavor and he did not. However, I love making speciality coffee and I enjoyed the flavor. Made wonderful ice coffee!!

Success!! Love this dark roast!
I took a chance purchasing this coffee, because you just never know if a flavor profile is right for you…and it was a 5 pound bag! I decided to purchase it because of the great reviews on flavor and bean variety selections seemed interesting. I felt like if it worked for me for flavor and had that buzz I was looking for to get my day started, my search would be over! This coffee is so delicious for my pour over coffee and it’s so much more economical at the per pound price. I broke it up into multiple packs and vacuum sealed them for freshness to freeze over the coming months. I would highly recommend this coffee!!

French Roast?
Rather dull and over-roasted. I am not getting much more from it than slightly burned taste and some vanilla. That’s what reminds me of French Roast – and I don’t like French Roast. Tried as espresso in espresso machine: 3.1 stars. Espresso machine with milk: 2 stars. French press with milk: 2 stars. Italian Percolator with milk: 3 stars. My 3-star rating is obviously very friendly. I just don’t want to discourage people who are into burned coffee beans. That said – I do love dark roasts, there is just a point where it has to stop to preserve coffee taste.UPDATE: After more unsuccessful attempts to get a good coffee out of this, and also different beans that I loved from other peoples machines , I did some homework – and everything pointed to my grinder. It was a brand new $80 grinder bought here. Apparently, it was not capable of producing a consistent grind for espresso machines. To my dismay I found out that there is no sub $300 (list price) grinder out there, which does. The cheapest option seems to be Baratza Sette 30, but I found a good deal on a used Rancilio Rocky. And it turned out that all those annoying Baristas, with their scales and micro-foams, are correct in this regard: The grinder is most important.Long story short: Difference like day and night! Finally some pleasant dark caramel notes, instead of “burned leftovers” and I was able to “dial out” unpleasant acidity.Honestly I am still not a huge fan of the coffee. But it turns out to be decent. Updating from 3 to 4 stars

Five Stars for Everything!
Not sure how many bags of this I’ve purchased at this point. I’ve tried a few other whole beans in between, but for flavor and value I haven’t found anything that can beat this. Large Cappuccino in the morning from fresh ground beans? Nothing better.

Not Italian Roast!! As advertised
I thought this coffee was Italian Roast as shown in picture! It’s a French roast, not a very good one either. I thought it was very bland, not the rich flavorful Roast I was looking for. Too bad I bought the 5 pound bag.

Coffee is still good but…
The coffee is still good but, I was not happy with the way it was shipped. I received it on 1-22-24 it there was NO packaging. Just a label slapped on the bag of coffee. It appears to be OK, but I don’t like the idea of something like this coming through with no protective packaging.

Take note expresso lovers
I have a fairly upscale coffee machine and am always on the hunt for a really great expresso. This dark roast blend makes a good latte, an alright americano, and an unpalatable expresso. I adjusted grind levels and proportions and still couldn’t get away from a harsh harsh shot.

Italian Dark Roast Coffee
5 lbs of Italian dark roast at a very reasonable price. Used to buy Italian dark at my local Trader Joe’s, but like many other products at TJ’s, gone!! pulled from shelves, or simply no longer selling it. So, 5 lbs of Brooklyn dark roast lighting up my mornings! Thank you!

Amazingly good coffee beans for the price
We are major coffee drinkers and operate a busy BNB in Washington, DC. We only drink and serve freshly ground beans with each cup. However, beans can be good or poor-costly or a bargain. This coffee bean was chosen because of the numerous 5 Star Reviews and the price. Once we poured these beans into our professional grade coffee makers, the aroma was amazing and the taste was even BETTER! Among the best rated coffee beans, which we have tried from around the world, this American brand is definitely up there with the best. It’s not European, it’s not South American, it’s not African-it’s a robust American taste. We may make this coffee bean our regular choice.
